Yeşil Okullar Programı UNESCO ile Küresel Eğitim Hareketinin Bir Parçası Oldu
01/10/2026
Green Schools Programme Joins UNESCO’s Global Education Movement
The Green Schools Programme, coordinated by the Turkish Cypriot Women Entrepreneurs Association (GİKAD) and Final International University (FIU), has achieved a significant international milestone in its fifth year by joining UNESCO’s Greening Education Partnership.
Launched in Northern Cyprus and later expanding to Türkiye and London, the programme aims to take environmental education beyond theoretical knowledge by integrating sustainability awareness into school culture and students’ daily lives. Implemented in cooperation with the TRNC Ministry of National Education, the programme has now reached more than 100 schools across Northern Cyprus, Türkiye, and London.
UNESCO’s Greening Education Partnership aims to transform at least 50 percent of schools in every country into green, climate-ready schools by 2030. Through the practices and initiatives developed in Northern Cyprus, the Green Schools Programme seeks to contribute to this global goal.
The theme for the 2026–2027 academic year has been announced as “Biodiversity and Water.” During the new academic year, practical activities will focus on water conservation, rainwater harvesting, drought, the protection of aquatic ecosystems, and raising awareness of Cyprus’s biodiversity.
Prof. Dr. Şerife Gündüz, Coordinator of the Green Schools Programme, highlighted that joining the UNESCO network represents an important step in strengthening the programme’s international presence. “Our goal is not only to make school grounds greener, but also to transform the way our children think and their everyday habits,” she said. Prof. Dr. Gündüz also expressed her appreciation to the students, teachers, school administrators, and supporting organisations that have contributed to the programme’s success.
Through the Green Schools Programme, Final International University continues to promote environmental sustainability, strengthen cooperation between education and society, and encourage future generations to take an active role in building a more sustainable world.
